If you are working in a business environment the information systems term can mean a couple different things. Personally in my line of work, I work in the information systems department for a hospital. Our Information Systems department is essentially the I.T. department to put it in other terms that many will understand. However we affiliate department with more so how we are aligned in our systems as a whole as well as the technologies behind it. There are many I.T. departments that refer to themselves as the Information Systems departments and we essentially are doing the same things. WE are supporting all of our end users as well as all of our systems that manage, maintain, process, and distribute data.
Sometimes there are business environments that have both an Information Technology department and an information Systems department. The information technology department will handle primarily the majority of your hardware, end users, and servers. Your information systems department might handle more of the applications and systems that are utilized on a day to day basis. If you are old school or new school terms such as AS400 or Green Screen is something that you may or may not be familiar with but this is a type of system that was often managed by an information systems department.
